Card Protection
A $500 card in a penny sleeve is a crime. Here's how to protect everything from your bulk to your grails.

Size matters — get this right first
The #1 beginner mistake is buying the wrong size protection. Japanese cards are NOT all the same size.
- Standard size (63x88mm) — Pokemon JP, One Piece, Weiss Schwarz, Digimon, Cardfight Vanguard, Union Arena. Use standard sleeves and top loaders
- Small/Mini size (59x86mm) — Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG ONLY. Needs specific mini sleeves and small top loaders
- If you put Yu-Gi-Oh! cards in standard top loaders, they rattle around and get edge damage. If you try to fit standard cards in mini sleeves, they won't fit. Check your game before buying
Sleeves
- Penny sleeves — the cheapest option. Fine for bulk/common cards. Not acid-free, not great for long-term. ~$1-3 per 100
- Perfect-fit / inner sleeves — tight fit, designed for double-sleeving. KMC Perfect Fit is the gold standard. Get the right size (Standard or Mini)
- Standard outer sleeves — for gameplay or the outer layer of a double-sleeve. KMC Hyper Mat, Dragon Shield Japanese size
- Double-sleeving — perfect-fit inner + outer sleeve. The minimum for any card worth $5+. Protects against dust, moisture, and surface contact
- Art sleeves — character sleeves from Bushiroad, Dragon Shield, Ultra Pro. Fun for gameplay, not recommended for grading or storage (opaque backs can hide damage)
Top loaders and rigid protection
- Standard top loaders (76x102mm / 3x4 inch) — for standard-size cards (Pokemon, One Piece, etc.)
- Mini/Small top loaders (60x88mm) — for Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG cards specifically
- 35pt thickness — standard for single cards. Thicker versions (55pt, 75pt) exist but aren't needed for regular TCG cards
- UV-protected top loaders — worth the premium for displayed cards. UV fading is permanent
- Card Saver 1 — semi-rigid holders required by PSA for grading submissions. Do NOT submit in top loaders
- Magnetic One-Touch holders — snap-shut rigid cases with magnets. Premium display option. UV versions available. $3-8 each
Binder storage
- Side-loading pages over top-loading — cards can't fall out when binder is upright. Non-negotiable for valuable collections
- 9-pocket pages — standard layout. Ultra Pro Platinum (acid-free, archival) or Dragon Shield for quality
- 4-pocket pages — for showcasing high-value cards with more visibility
- D-ring binders over O-ring — keeps pages flat, reduces bending at the rings
- Japanese-specific binder pages exist from Bushiroad and Ultimate Guard with tighter pockets for 63x88mm cards
- Sleeve your cards BEFORE putting them in binder pages. Never put raw cards directly into pockets
Environmental protection
- UV light — fades prints permanently. Keep displayed cards away from windows. Use UV-protective cases for display
- Humidity — ideal 40-50% relative humidity. Too dry = brittle cards. Too humid = warping, mold. Silica gel packets in storage boxes help
- Temperature — 18-22°C ideal. Avoid attics, garages, cars. Temperature cycling causes warping and foil separation
- Storage boxes — BCW 200/400/800 count boxes for bulk. Dividers prevent cards from shifting
- For graded slabs — specific slab storage boxes sized for PSA/BGS cases
